Employee of the Month! Rob!

I can’t believe what started out as a joke between Frank Bastone and I turned into a joke that basically everyone at 61 found out about and then got me Employee of the Month. I still remember coming in for my interview with Frank Jr. and I was more nervous as I ever have been. I would have never thought that I would have came here and learned as much as I have in the 4 short months that I have.

Rob is the May 2011 Employee of the Month!

Coming to work everyday and working with everyone has been awesome and is something new and exciting every time I come in. I tell everybody about how great Lawline is and how it is so much more different than any company that I have ever heard of. What other company president takes his entire company out rock climbing for a team building event like Dave did. Lawline is such an awesome place full of people who want to help each other out to make everyone succeed. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for me here and for the rest of the company, but I am definitely excited to find out.

One question I have for the future is, do I have to start wearing a belt now?

Matt’s Three Month Review

Matt was hired in February to work in Lawline’s Sales Department and has done a great job in helping the company expand to new markets. He took the time out to reflect on his first three months on the job:

Not all sales jobs are created equal. This is something I’ve found out in the few months I’ve been here at Lawline. I used to think that telemarketing was telemarketing regardless of what you were selling and what company you worked for. At Lawline, this is definitely not the case. I have had countless jobs since I was little. Whether it was, mowing lawns, umpiring little league baseball, working as a security guard at my university’s art museum, to sales for large and small companies, I feel like my work experience has been relatively balanced. One thing that sets Lawline apart from all the others, is the sense of teamwork and impact each individual employee has on the company’s success and achievement.

At Lawline, you are not just another number. You are an individual who plays an important role on the success and progression of the company. We work closely and directly with management, other sales reps, and all aspects and departments of Lawline to ensure that this company succeeds. Each individual has a voice and everyone here listens. Creativity is encouraged, feedback is appreciated and ideas are implemented. This is something very few companies still do today.

One thing I really like about Lawline, is that their chain of command is flat compared to all other companies I have ever worked for. I don’t feel a sense of a “totem-pole hierarchy”. I don’t feel like just because I am a sales rep, who has only been here for a few months, that I am any less important than any others. We are a team, a group of individuals collectively working together to achieve a goal. Each individual plays an important role in achieving this goal and without each specific individual, our goals cannot be achieved.

The most important thing I have learned since being here at Lawline is that things aren’t always giving to you on a golden platter. If you want something, you have to go and get it. Hard work and determination are the keys to success here and in life. Reaching a goal through effort is the most rewarding way to achieve success. You get out what you put in and hard work and determination will pay off greatly. Lawline provides you with the resources and tools to achieve greatness.

Sales is cyclical and has countless ups and downs. It is a roller-coaster, but Lawline does all that it can to keep each individual on the up. We have happy hours, have gone rock climbing and consistently have contests to add a little friendly competition. If you want to work in a work-hard play-hard environment where you can play a major impact in individual and collective success, then Lawline is for you. Here you’re not just another number but a key component in the success of a fast growing company.

Lawline Faculty Member Defends Head of IMF

brafman

Recently the head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been charged with Sexual Assault, Forcible Confinement and Attempted Rape. We won’t opine whether he is guilty or not but will make note that the lawyer he choose to lead his legal defense was none other than our very own Benjamin Brafman. CNN recently did a short profile which can be read here. CNN’s legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin, is quoted “the single best courtroom attorney I’ve ever seen” in reference to Brafman. While the article gives you a great run down of how great a lawyer Benjamin Brafman is you can see for yourself right here on Lawline. We have four courses taught by Mr. Brafman himself and another featuring him. His most popular course with Lawline is “The Strategic Defense of High Profile Clients”, which after representing the likes of Jay-Z and Michael Jackson he is more than an expert on.

We here at Lawline, wanting to share his expertise with the world are actually giving away the course for free! We hope you enjoy the course.

At our most recent team event we handed out two important things. Our Core Values on a business card so everyone can carry it on them and our Core Values newsletter.  The key to the newsletter was to put real life examples of how individuals exude these values on a regular basis.

In an effort to dig deep into the roots of each Lawline core value, today we discussed Taking Time to Help Others.

In creating an effective team atmosphere, we’re always striving to:

  • Be understanding of individual perspectives.
  • Be open and approachable.
  • Take initiative in offering help.
  • Go the extra mile to show we care.
  • Foster relationships.

Through actively engaging in helping others and the addition and enhancement of every relationship, we add synergy to our production, overall enjoyment, and, ultimately, bottom line.

Drive – Micah Bochart

In the winter of 2011, it was 7 AM on a Tuesday morning when a large blizzard struck the tri-state area. Trains, subways, and roads were shut down and as a result schools and offices were closed (yes, even Lawline). The easy thing to do was to crawl back into bed and take advantage of a day off. This is what most people would do, unless they are Micah Bochart.

Instead, Micah knew he had specific objectives for the day and that his presence at the office was the only way to get it done. Thus, when he looked outside, he saw something a little different than most: he saw a challenge.  With well over three miles to go, Micah strapped on his boots and made the trek to the office one footprint at a time.   Did Micah have to put those courses online that exact day? No – the company would have been okay and the work could have been done the next day. But that didn’t matter to Micah – he knew the bigger picture.

Every time a “COURSE LIVE” ends up in the Lawline.com inbox, the company becomes a little stronger. On that Tuesday, Micah’s drive demonstrated that Lawline.com grows every single day, whether it be rain, shine, or horrendous blizzard.

Optimism – Guy Halperin

The key to success in sales is keeping a positive mental attitude at all times, especially after hearing the word “no” over and over. The best salesmen and women know that the next yes could be in the following call and always continue to contact new customers despite the “no’s.”

Having a consistently optimistic attitude helps maintain one’s mental equilibrium in all areas of life, and the ability to do this in the face of adversity is something that Guy Halperin exudes every day.

In October 2010, Guy joined Lawline’s California Deadline team. He started out with a top selling month of 56 sales. Soon after, in January 2011, he completed 90 sales in a single month – a number that surpassed the entire sales from outbound calls from 2009.

In February, Guy had a serious operation which took him out of the office for the entire month. Yet, that has not changed his positive attitude and Guy continues to make his calls from home and moreover he stays atop of the leader board.

When one has the optimism of Guy Halprin, the next victory is always just one call away.

Helping Others – Michael Rutledge

It is unusual for one employee to have his hand in every aspect of a company. To do so, the person has to be committed to helping anyone whenever needed. There is one example where this can be easily seen: walk into the offices at 61 Broadway and look at the paint job. Every room has a unique and bright color that was masterminded by a single individual. Quite literally, one will immediately see that a team member has indeed had his hand in every area of the company, literally and figuratively, and that person is Michael Rutledge.

The story of the office paint is really a metaphor for Michael’s time at Lawline. Initially, the company decided to create a “Studio” for filming programs, which required moving and reshuffling work areas as well as painting the new studio. Originally, the company decided to hire painters and movers. Michael, however, eagerly said “No need- I’ll do it!”

It was a big job that he began at 9:00 am on a Saturday morning which did not conclude until 1:00 am the next day. Michael refused to leave any spot unpainted nor any desk unmoved.

When Monday morning came, there was a new office and every person was able to start their day without any loss of production. Mike’s ability to take the time to help others continues to push the company forward every day.

Creative Solutions – Christie LaBarca

Business Intelligence is the key to implementing effective marketing and sales decisions. To make the best use of information, though, requires a dynamic person to know what data is most important, how to obtain it, and how to use it effectively. This is a rare ability. What is even more unique is the person that not only knows how to create intelligent information, but also communicates with customers on a daily basis. Christie LaBarca is that individual.

Christie possesses both creativity and strong interpersonal and social skills.  She started at Lawline.com during a period when only a limited number of products were sold, despite customers with extremely varying demands across 41 states.  Through her ingenuity, she recognized that the time of the year, the state, the customer history, and even the customer behavior dictated buyer behavior.

Christie then took the initiative to outline a custom CRM in which Lawline.com employees would be able to differentiate all customers based on multiple criteria. Taking it to the next level, she used the system to divide up every customer into a specific purchase segment, drafted predictions, and proceeded (with help) to call each and every one.

From here, not only was a new revenue source created, but there was a substantially large increase in customer satisfaction. Christie’s creativity led to a personalized offer for each customer, and this has created an innovative and original customer retention program unseen before her vision.

Actively Learning – Kyle Robinson

Think back to your first day on the job. Could you identify our top selling product? Did you know how to set up a customer purchase? Did you even know what CLE stands for?

The learning curve in any new environment is high. There are unfamiliar systems and colleagues as well as the overall pressures of starting a different position. In fact, it can take months or even years to become fully acclimated and comfortable.

This was not the case for Program Attorney Kyle Robinson, who conquered Lawline.com’s learning curve in about 6 hours.

Kyle joined Lawline to grow the company’s faculty base; mainly by maintaining relations with our current faculty and expanding the surrounding networks. However, at the end of his first day, he unknowingly answered a customer service call which rang in his office.

Once the caller on the line stated that she was interested in signing up for courses, the easy thing to do would have been for Kyle to transfer the call or hand it to a colleague. Kyle, however, chose to learn it on his own. He navigated through the site with the customer, found the Unlimited CLE package, led her through the signup, and checked her through the cart.

In a moment’s decision, people usually rely on instincts. Kyle’s first instinct was to actively learn. As a result, Lawline gained a new customer, a $499 sale, and a role model in Kyle who has brought the same enthusiasm to every task on a daily basis.

Lawline Team Building Event

Lawline stepped out of the office early on Friday afternoon to tackle some of the tallest indoor rock climbing walls in Brooklyn!

Lawline scaled the walls of Brooklyn Boulder Friday for their latest Team Building Event!

The company’s latest Team Building Event featured employees pairing up to take part in a race up the wall for a $200 gift certificate. While only one team came away the prize, everyone had a blast and got to enjoy a day of laughing and climbing.

“When we were trying to figure out what our next Team Building Event should be, we wanted to do choose something that was different,” said David Schnurman, President of Lawline, “We are a different company. We are always looking to find a better way. And this type of activity makes you think outside the box as you figure out the fastest way to the top of the wall.”

All Lawline employees were given a Core Values card, individualized to each employee, which described the meaning behind the company’s mission: To become the universal standard for continuing education – one market, one state, one course at a time.

The company also shared with everyone the very first Lawline Core Values Newsletter. Five employees were highlighted in each category of actively learning, seeking creative solutions, taking time to help others, exuding optimism, and driven to find a better way.

“It is an honor to be put into the very first Core Values Newsletter,” said Christie LaBarca, Director of Customer Relations, “Building a team that has revolved around our customers had helped us to grow into what we are today, and will propel us in the future.”

What’s next up for Lawline and Team Building? Stay tuned to find out!

Got What it Takes?

SchnurmanD-12

Recently, our own CEO David Schnurman was featured in a number of articles where he is asked to share a little of his business wisdom. He gives advice on creating a successful direct mail campaign, being careful not to be prideful in your business, and using Google to your advantage. These points are all well taken, and Lawline does this extremely well.

As Lawline has continued to grow impressively it is easy to forget the hard work and vision that goes into making sure the company is aimed in the right direction. I highly suggest these articles to anyone who is interested in Lawline’s continued assent as a developing company in a tough economic atmosphere.
